For this project, I made a portrait of my boyfriend using Procreate. I did not focus on realistic detail, and instead simplified his face into flat shapes and color blocks so it becomes part of the overall structure. The gramophone comes from his interest in jazz and vintage music, and it works as the visual center of the image. I placed it inside a dark circular form to suggest a space of sound or memory. The geometric shapes and color blocking are influenced by Bauhaus, which connects to his background in architecture. I kept the palette limited to maintain a clear and consistent composition, and used strong contrast to make the image feel more graphic and structured. Through this process, I focused on how identity can be shown through selected elements and visual organization, rather than detailed likeness.

Hi Chenyu! This portrait is beautiful – Bauhaus influence is definitely coming through. I think that a viewer with no prior knowledge could easily get a sense of your boyfriends' personality and interests through this piece. I also appreciate the level of texture that your piece has – it appears like it was printed in some kind of gritty paper (and should be hung in a jazz club somewhere.) Super cool work! :-)
ReplyDeleteHello Chenyu, I agree with what Kate said about how this portrait shows what kind of person your boyfriend is. The color schemes are very jazzy and old-fashioned. The colors feel cozy. If you could add a few texts there, that would be a great poster!
ReplyDeleteHi Chenyu, I like how this portrait turned out! The layered coarse paper texture adds to the vintage feel. The way you rendered your boyfriend also has a bit of an anime vibe, which makes the whole piece feel very cohesive and graphic.
ReplyDeleteChenyu! I also wanted to say this portrait is beautiful! I agree with Yihan that the coarse paper texture really enhances the vintage feel. I also love how each element carries its own symbolic meaning and connects to your boyfriend’s personality and interests. I think art really stems from attention and care, and this work exemplifies that beautifully!
ReplyDeleteChenyu! Your use of color and texture is so beautiful and effective in this piece. I'm reminded of the graphic nature of comic book art with a really nice tactile twist. The way you simplified the shadows and shapes within the figure/object are captivating. This piece really clearly tells a story and allows us a glimpse into your boyfriend's passions.
